Balanced Nutrition

Vandemoortele takes pride in offering food products that are not only tasty and of high quality, but also demonstrably safe. Our food brings people together for enjoyable moments with friends and family.

Guaranteeing clean and safe food products with a good nutritional balance is of paramount importance to us. We improve our products to make them tastier in a more sustainable way and to enable people to make well-informed food choices.

Day after day, we invest in research and product development to raise the bar ever higher in terms of food quality and safety.

Goals and commitments

Improve nutrition profile

We work hard to improve the nutrition profile of our products. Frequently-used products, like bread and spreads, we make as healthy as possible. We follow the recommendations of food experts and the World Health Organization to reduce the amount of sugar, salt and saturated fats and to increase our use of fibre and unsaturated fats. A good example is our range of Baker’s margarines that is used in our Banquet d'Or Essential range.

For indulgence products like donuts and croissants, our first priority is a tasty experience: a moment of happiness in a busy world. However, their nutrition profile is by no means unimportant. We continuously strive to improve all our products, for example by using less salt and sugar.

Whenever we claim a health benefit for one of our products, we make sure it has been approved by the EU. In the last few years, we have made significant progress towards a more nutritious portfolio. To bring about the advances in food we need, we have set up the Vandemoortele Centre for Lipid Science and Technology, in a research partnership with the University of Ghent.

Clean Label

Consumers are increasingly looking for healthier, more trustworthy foods with simple and recognizable ingredients and a clear, understandable composition. In 2020, we launched our own Clean Label: a straightforward label that clearly states which ingredients we use.

The Vandemoortele Clean Label is granted to products that contain no artificial colorants, no preservatives, no hydrogenated oils or fats, no high fructose corn syrup and no chemically modified starch. If additions are needed for functional reasons, we only use natural flavours and a small number of well-tested additives.  Find out everything about the Vandemoortele Clean Label here.

Our Clean Label allows us to focus on food products that are ‘good for you’. We aim to communicate clearly and transparently about how our foods fit in the framework of a varied and balanced diet and an active lifestyle. For more help and guidance, feel free to check our Frequently Asked Questions about Clean Label.

Plant-based alternatives

Moving towards a more plant-based diet can reduce many health risks. It also benefits the environment: by eating less products of animal origin, we conserve water, save animal and plant habitats and cut our carbon footprint. With consumers’ demands changing rapidly, Vandemoortele is adding more plant-based products to its portfolio.

We already market many plant-based, vegetarian and vegan products. Most of our margarines are plant-based and contain less saturated fat than butter. Our plant-based bakery products are sometimes supplemented with butter, eggs or milk for optimal taste, but we are looking at plant-based alternatives for these ingredients.

Leader in food safety

As a food producer, we take the responsibility to bring safe products to the market. Our key ambition is to be a leader in food safety. All our production plants follow the standards of the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), a worldwide organisation to standardise food safety norms. Our partners have to meet the same quality standards. We have a team of more than 100 people across Europe to make sure that, every day, we comply with all relevant legislation and meet all the leading food safety standards.

Our foreign body policy outlines a protocol to prevent foreign objects like insects or pieces of plastic ending up in food products. We protect our facilities against internal and external sabotage and equip them with surveillance cameras, fences and other security systems. By being transparent about our products and ingredients, we commit to zero food fraud.
